If it still turns on chances are it can still do some good stuff.
I'm willing to help people find uses for old computers and computer equipment at no charge in person who live in the Quincy area. And I'll gladly help anyone from anywhere online.
I'd really like to see a "Free-Geek" started here like the one in Keokuk, However I am no good at paperwork or things needed to start a non-profit group like this.
Here are a few ideas to get you started:
1. Media Server (Works great if you have an original XBOX or use VLC on a pc)
2. Storage server (You don't need a high end machine to store data for you.
3. Web server, ftp, etc. (Make that old machine a tinkering box)
4. Livecd pc (Run some cool livecd's no hard drive needed)
5. Thin Client (Want to give the kids a computer but don't have the extra cash, thinclients are a great way to do so)
6. Cluster (Put several older machines to work doing tasks while your new computer plays games)
7. Firewall / Router / Packet shaper (Use old machines to manage your entire network and filter content to keep kids safe)
8. Arcade machine (Turn the old machine into a game system to play old arcade and dos games)
These are just a few ideas, Drop me a message if your interested.
